The sheer amount of information available today about internet marketing can be overwhelming and confusing for the typical small business owner. This is one reason many small business owners avoid marketing via the internet, despite the many advantages of a targeted, internet marketing campaign. But wading through all the jargon and confusing technological concepts is not necessary for making practical use of internet marketing methods. The basics of internet marketing is no more complicated than other, more traditional forms of marketing. Whether your business is already online or not, much of the small business economy is conducted via the internet, and so understanding the basics of the internet, and of internet marketing, is critical for the success of your business.
I strongly believe that whether or not your business succeeds depends on how well you can get yourself noticed, how well you provide people with reasons to devote their loyalty to you, and finally, what claims they make about you. Whether on the street, or online, it is that easy. The only things that differ are the particular methods you use to make these things happen.
There are two basic ways to draw attention to your business online. You can pay for advertising or earn it by putting yourself out there and networking, letting people know what service you provide. Yes, it really is that simple! However, whether you succeed or fail depends upon on your ability to put the theory into practice and make solid marketing plans.
You can put your advertisements in front of your customers' eyes in a variety of different ways. If done correctly, advertising can be an effective, efficient method of reaching potential buyers -- but if done incorrectly, it can be a disastrous waste of your money. What matters is whether you target your audience effectively. The internet offers several advantages to advertisers, such as the ability to quickly determine the effectiveness of your ad and the relatively low cost barriers to entry. One opportunity to advertise online is using Google Adwords, the text ads that appear to the side of Google search results and which are syndicated to millions of other websites across the Internet. Many other online providers also offer their own text advertising services, including Yahoo and MSN. In future articles I'll talk about other forms of advertising that may interest you.
There is one other way for your potential customers to see your ads on the internet, and that is by earning their attention. Your goals are to be listed as highly as possible in the results of searches that you consider important, and to have other sites mention your services and sending business direct traffic your way. To do these things, you need to constantly provide content other websites will use. This take a lot of time and money to be effective, but produces much more durable results than simply buying ads. I tend to favor this method because of its positive long term effects, but to make this system work you need to be very careful and to know exactly what you're doing.
